Merge fields – field code case issue

We have a large number of doc files that have merge fields with lowercase “field codes” (see attached image). It seems like NexJ merge field handling ignores { mergefield City}  but expands {MERGEFIELD City} . It would be great if both were expanded. Opening the file with Word, both seem to be considered merge fields.

To answer my own question, it looks like the lowercase mergefield is actually not a real merge field – it’s recognized as a field but not a merge field, so my question is invalid.
